The 105mm Gun Motor Carriage M7, nicknamed “Priest” by British forces for the pulpit-like antiaircraft machine gun ring at the front right of the hull, was the standard self-propelled artillery of the US Army and its allies throughout the Second World War — the 105mm howitzer mounted on an M3 or M4 Sherman hull providing mobile fire support that could keep pace with armoured advances. The M7B1 variant used the M4A3 Sherman hull rather than the M3 of the original M7, simplifying logistics. M7s served in North Africa, Italy, northwest Europe, and the Pacific, and the Priest remained in service with numerous armies long after the war. UM Models’ 1/72 kit captures the M7B1 variant.
