The Soviet T-80 light tank — not to be confused with the later Cold War main battle tank of the same designation — was a 1942 development of the T-70 with a two-man turret that addressed the serious deficiency of the T-70’s single-man turret, where the commander was overloaded with the duties of observation, loading, and gunnery simultaneously. The T-80 entered limited production in 1943 but was soon overtaken by the decision to phase out light tanks entirely in favour of increased T-34 production, and only a small number were built. This makes the T-80 a rare and historically interesting subject for collectors of Soviet armour. UM Models’ 1/72 kit captures this short-lived Soviet light tank.
