The M4A1 Sherman was the first production variant of the Sherman to enter service, distinguished by its cast hull — a single-piece casting rather than the welded plates of most other Sherman variants — and powered by the Continental R975 radial engine. M4A1s were the Shermans supplied to Britain under Lend-Lease as the “Sherman II”, fighting at El Alamein and through the North African and Italian campaigns. The distinctive rounded cast hull makes the M4A1 immediately identifiable among Sherman variants and gives the model a characterful, purposeful appearance. UM Models’ 1/72 kit captures the M4A1 cast-hull Sherman.
