The SU-76 was the Red Army’s most produced self-propelled gun of the Second World War — over 14,000 built, second only to the T-34 in Soviet armoured vehicle production. Built on the T-70 light tank chassis and armed with the 76mm ZIS-3 divisional gun, it provided Soviet infantry with mobile direct fire support and anti-tank capability against all but the heaviest German armour. Nicknamed “Suka” (the bitch) by Red Army soldiers for its open-topped fighting compartment that exposed the crew to the elements and shell fragments, the SU-76 nonetheless proved an invaluable close support weapon throughout the last two years of the war.
