A late-war Panzer IV in 1/72 scale
UM Models kit 548 represents the German Panzer IV Ausf. J, the final production version of one of the Second World War's most widely used tanks. Its long-barrelled 7.5 cm gun and distinctive profile make it a recognisable subject for a small-scale armour collection or late-war diorama.
Historical background
Introduced in 1944, the Ausf. J reflected Germany's need to simplify production while continuing to field effective armoured vehicles. A significant change from the Ausf. H was the removal of the powered turret traverse system, leaving the crew to turn the turret manually. The Panzer IV remained in service through the closing stages of the war, even as newer designs such as the Panther fought alongside it.
The Ausf. J is a useful modelling subject for exploring the contrast between a battle-proven design and the compromises of late-war manufacture. A restrained camouflage finish, worn edges and dusty running gear can bring that story to life on the workbench.
