UM Models 1/72 T-55AD1 Medium Tank (232)

A Cold War T-55 with active protection

UM Models kit 232 represents the Soviet T-55AD1, a specialised development of the long-serving T-55 tank family. Its Drozd active protection equipment makes it an unusual subject alongside more conventional Cold War armour in 1/72 scale.

Historical background

The T-55 became one of the most widely produced tanks of the Cold War. Armed with a 100 mm gun, it served with the Soviet Union and many other countries, and its design provided a basis for numerous upgrades intended to extend its usefulness.

The T-55AD programme introduced the Drozd active protection system in the early 1980s. Rather than relying solely on armour to absorb a hit, Drozd used radar to detect approaching threats and defensive projectiles to intercept them. It was among the earliest active protection systems fielded on operational tanks, marking an important step in the development of vehicle survivability.

This model offers a way to explore that transition from traditional armour protection to active defensive technology. The distinctive equipment gives the familiar T-55 silhouette a different character, making it a useful addition to a Cold War display or a reference-led diorama.
