The Blackburn Firebrand was one of the most troubled development programmes in Fleet Air Arm history — originally designed as a single-seat naval fighter, it was overtaken by the Supermarine Seafire and redesigned as a torpedo fighter, finally entering service in 1945 as the TF Mk.5 too late to see wartime action. Big, powerful, and armed with a torpedo, four 20mm cannon, and rockets, the Firebrand was a potent strike aircraft but its handling characteristics were difficult and its career was brief. Valom’s 1/72 kit captures the TF Mk.5 — the definitive and most produced variant — in the Fleet Air Arm scheme of its brief post-war service.
