The Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf.D was the most produced variant of Germany’s standard armoured half-track — the vehicle that mechanised the German infantry and made the combined-arms panzergrenadier concept a reality on every front from the Arctic to the Western Desert. The Ausf.D simplified the earlier marks’ construction with flat armoured panels replacing the angled surfaces of the Ausf.C, speeding manufacture without compromising protection, and was produced in very large numbers from 1943 until the end of the war. The Sd.Kfz. 251 appeared in over 22 variants covering roles from basic armoured personnel carrier to command vehicle, mortar carrier, and rocket launcher.
