The “Stuka zu Fuß” (Walking Stuka) was an informal name given to the Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track fitted with the Wurfrahmen 40 — wooden frames carrying 280mm or 320mm rocket projectors on each side of the vehicle that could deliver a devastating salvo of high-explosive or incendiary rockets against enemy positions, bunkers, or troop concentrations. The psychological effect of the rocket salvo was considerable, and the Stuka zu Fuß was used for the storming of Sevastopol in 1942 and in numerous other heavy assault operations. The informal nickname connected it to the Ju 87 Stuka dive bomber in the minds of German troops — both capable of delivering terrifying firepower in support of ground forces. Vespid Models’ 1/35 kit captures this dramatic rocket-armed half-track variant.
The rocket-armed half-track the troops called the Walking Stuka — Sd.Kfz. 251 Stuka zu Fuß in 1/35 scale.
