The Centurion Mk 5/1 in Royal Australian Armoured Corps service during the Vietnam War represents one of the most effective tank deployments of that conflict — the Centurion’s thick armour proving highly resistant to RPG and recoilless rifle fire in the close terrain of the Vietnamese jungle, and its 20-pounder gun providing devastating direct fire support to Australian infantry in engagements such as the Battle of Binh Ba in 1969. Australian Centurions served with C Squadron, 1st Armoured Regiment, and their performance fundamentally changed US Army assessments of tank usefulness in jungle warfare.
