The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk in the markings of the American Volunteer Group — the Flying Tigers — is one of the most iconic colour schemes in aviation history, the shark-mouth nose art applied to AVG aircraft in China becoming a symbol of American air power in the Far East before the United States formally entered the Second World War. The Flying Tigers flew P-40s against the Japanese air force over China and Burma from late 1941, achieving an impressive combat record against numerically superior opponents through disciplined use of the P-40’s diving speed and firepower advantages. Xixili Model’s 1/48 kit captures the P-40 in the distinctive AVG shark-mouth scheme.
