The M36B1 was a wartime improvisation that worked. With demand for the 90mm-armed M36 tank destroyer outstripping the supply of suitable hulls, Fisher Body mated the M36 turret directly to a standard M4A3 Sherman hull, producing a vehicle that looked like a Sherman from the waist down and a tank destroyer from the waist up. Around 187 were built and rushed to Europe, where the 90mm gun finally gave American crews a weapon that could deal with German heavy armour at range.
