The PV-1 Ventura began life as a Lockheed airliner and ended it as one of the hardest-working patrol bombers of the Pacific war. Fast, heavily armed and long-legged, it flew anti-submarine patrol, night interception and low-level strikes against Japanese shipping and island airfields. The RAAF took the type on strength and worked it hard from northern Australia and New Guinea, where its range and punch suited the vast distances of the South West Pacific. This boxing carries Australian military service markings.
The airliner that went to war and stayed out longest.
