Sketched by Leonardo da Vinci around 1478, the self propelling cart is often called the world's first robot. Driven by coiled springs and steered by a programmable arrangement of pegs, it could be set to follow a course with no rider at all, some four centuries before anything comparable was built. Academy's kit assembles into a working model that actually runs, making it as much a piece of engineering history as a display piece.
