The Sd.Kfz.221 was the lightest of the German four-wheeled armoured cars, introduced in 1935 and used extensively in the Polish and French campaigns and the early stages of the North African and Eastern Front operations. Armed with an MG 34 in an open-topped turret, the first series retained the original four-sided turret design before being replaced by the six-sided version. Fast and agile on roads, it was used for reconnaissance and liaison duties but proved too lightly protected for sustained combat.
