A British wartime transport workhorse
IBG’s 1/35 scale Bedford QLD General Service kit depicts one of the British Army’s familiar wartime trucks. Kit 35015 offers a transport subject that tells the story behind the front line: the movement of stores, equipment and the everyday loads that kept military units operating.
Historical background
The Bedford QL family was developed to meet British military requirements for a three-ton, four-wheel-drive truck. Production began in 1941, and its forward-control layout placed the cab above the engine, giving the vehicle its distinctive compact profile while leaving space for the load body.
The QLD was the general-service cargo version of the QL family. Its practical design made it useful for a wide range of transport duties, while other members of the family were adapted for specialist tasks. The QL became an important part of British wartime motor transport and continued in use after the war.
Although less celebrated than tanks or fighters, trucks such as the QLD were essential to sustained operations. Ammunition, food, tools and spare parts all had to reach the units that needed them. A general-service truck is therefore a natural subject for a scene centred on a supply point, a convoy halt or the routine work behind an advancing army.
