IBG 1/35 Bedford QLR Wireless (35017)

Keeping the army connected

IBG’s 1/35 scale Bedford QLR Wireless kit depicts a specialist member of the British wartime Bedford QL family. Kit 35017 offers a subject focused on military communications, making a distinctive companion to cargo trucks, troop carriers and fighting vehicles.

Historical background

The Bedford QL family entered production in 1941 to meet British military requirements for a three-ton, four-wheel-drive truck. Its forward-control cab gave it a recognisable profile, while the chassis provided a platform for several specialised bodies and roles.

The QLR was the wireless version, carrying an enclosed body arranged for radio equipment and its operators rather than the open cargo body of the general-service QLD. Mobile wireless vehicles helped maintain communication between headquarters and units, allowing information and orders to pass as formations moved.

Reliable communications were essential to coordinating wartime operations. A wireless truck represented more than transport: it provided a working space for the personnel and equipment that kept command networks functioning. The QLR therefore tells a different part of the battlefield story, one centred on signals, organisation and the work behind the front line.
