Heavy haulage for Britain’s artillery
IBG’s 1/35 scale Scammell Pioneer R100 Artillery Tractor depicts a distinctive British military vehicle built to move heavy guns. Kit 35030 offers a subject from the working side of wartime artillery, where getting a gun into position was as important as firing it.
Historical background
The Scammell Pioneer was developed as a heavy off-road vehicle, with a six-wheel layout, drive to the rear wheels and suspension designed to cope with uneven ground. Its low-speed pulling ability made it well suited to demanding military tasks, and the Pioneer family served in artillery, recovery and tank-transport roles.
The R100 was the artillery tractor version, introduced into British Army service before the Second World War. Unlike the SV/2S recovery variant, its principal purpose was towing artillery. The vehicle also carried gun crews and equipment, supporting the movement and deployment of heavy weapons.
Its diesel engine, substantial traction and winch helped crews handle difficult routes and gun positions. The Pioneer’s tall cab and purposeful proportions made it a recognisable part of British wartime motor transport, reflecting an era when heavy artillery depended on specialised tractors to keep pace with operations.
