HMS Ilex was an I-class destroyer of the Royal Navy, serving through some of the most intense destroyer operations of the war including the Mediterranean campaigns of 1941–1942. The I-class were slightly more capable than the preceding G and H classes and served extensively in the Mediterranean where destroyer warfare reached its most intense and sustained pitch — the convoys to Malta and the battles around Crete and Sicily placing extraordinary demands on these ships and their crews. Ilex's 1942 Mediterranean configuration represents the ship in her most operationally significant period, with the wartime modifications and armament that operational experience had mandated.
