HMS Ithuriel was an I-class destroyer best known for her role in the defence of convoy Pedestal in August 1942 — one of the most heavily contested convoy operations of the entire war, in which the Royal Navy fought through overwhelming Axis air and submarine attacks to get vital supplies to Malta. During Pedestal, Ithuriel sank the Italian submarine Cobalto by ramming — an act of aggressive destroyer work that characterised the Royal Navy's approach to anti-submarine warfare. The ship's 1942 configuration represents her at the peak of her wartime service, during the operations that decided Malta's survival and with it the course of the Mediterranean campaign.
