The Maultier (“Mule”) was Germany's solution to the traction problem on the Eastern Front, where the standard wheeled trucks bogged down in the notorious mud of the Russian rasputitsa and the deep snow of winter. By replacing the rear axle with a Carden-Lloyd type halftrack running gear, German engineers created a vehicle with dramatically improved cross-country capability while retaining the Ford truck's proven cab and drivetrain. The 917t Maultier based on the V3000 chassis was the most numerous variant, and it served on the Eastern Front and in other theatres wherever the going was too difficult for wheeled vehicles. The distinctive halftrack rear makes it an immediately recognisable and visually fascinating model.
