The Bedford QLR was the signals and radio vehicle variant of the QL family, fitted with a distinctive enclosed body housing radio equipment and the aerials needed to maintain communications across the battlefield. Signals vehicles were the nervous system of a modern army — without the QLR's radio links, artillery could not be directed, headquarters could not coordinate, and the whole structure of combined-arms warfare fell apart. Less glamorous than a gun or tank, the QLR was arguably more important than either. Its distinctive silhouette with antenna masts and enclosed body makes it an immediately identifiable and compelling model subject.
