The Cromwell was the best British cruiser tank of the Second World War — fast, reliable, and powered by the Rolls-Royce Meteor engine derived from the Merlin that gave the Spitfire its performance. Armed with a 75mm gun capable of firing both AP and HE, the Mk.IV with its Hull Type D was the definitive production Cromwell, equipping the 7th Armoured Division and 11th Armoured Division from D-Day through to the Rhine crossing. In Normandy its speed was often constrained by the hedgerow country, but in the breakout and pursuit across France and Belgium the Cromwell finally showed what it could do.
