The Crusader Close Support variant replaced the standard 2-pounder gun with a 3-inch howitzer, trading anti-armour capability for the ability to fire smoke and high-explosive rounds in direct support of infantry operations. It served alongside gun-armed Crusaders in the same formations, providing the smoke screens that covered tank advances and the HE fire that suppressed anti-tank gun crews. As a specialist variant it represents the tactical complexity of British armoured doctrine in the desert campaign, where each troop ideally contained a mix of gun and CS tanks working in concert. IBG's kit captures this less commonly modelled but operationally essential variant with its shorter-barrelled howitzer and desert campaign markings.
