The Scammell Pioneer SV/1S was the heavy breakdown and recovery variant, equipped with a powerful winch and jib for lifting and recovering the heaviest vehicles on the Allied inventory. Where the lighter Diamond T wreckers could handle trucks and armoured cars, the Pioneer SV/1S was needed when a Churchill or Matilda needed recovering — its extraordinary pulling power and lifting capacity making it irreplaceable for heavy tank recovery operations. The recovery equipment gives the SV/1S a different and purposeful appearance from the tank transporter variants, and it represents the REME's most capable recovery asset at the heavy end of the vehicle scale.
