The Heston Special was the designation given to early PR Spitfires that were modified at Heston aerodrome under Sidney Cotton's unconventional and semi-clandestine photographic reconnaissance operation before the RAF formally took over the PR role. These aircraft carried cameras in unique and experimental fits developed outside normal Air Ministry channels, and the Heston Special represents the pioneering period of British aerial reconnaissance when improvisation and individual initiative were driving capability faster than official programmes could manage. A rare and fascinating marking option that connects the Spitfire to one of the war's most interesting intelligence stories.
