A Spitfire built to bring back intelligence
IBG’s 1/72 scale Supermarine Spitfire PR Type G “Playing with Death” explores a less familiar side of the famous fighter’s wartime story. Kit 72600 depicts a photographic reconnaissance variant, a subject whose purpose was to return with photographs rather than a tally of enemy aircraft destroyed.
Historical background
Early in the Second World War, the Spitfire’s speed and performance made it a valuable platform for photographic reconnaissance. Specialised conversions carried cameras to record enemy positions, transport infrastructure and other targets, providing intelligence for operational planning and assessing the results of attacks.
The PR Type G was developed for low-level photographic reconnaissance. Unlike many unarmed reconnaissance Spitfires, it retained machine-gun armament, reflecting the hazards of operating closer to the ground and the possibility of encountering enemy aircraft. The type was later redesignated PR Mk.VII.
Low-level reconnaissance demanded accurate navigation and carefully timed photographic runs, often with little margin for error. The photographs brought home by these aircraft helped turn fleeting observations into information that commanders could study and act upon. This role gives the Type G a distinctive place in the wider Spitfire story.
