The Chi-Nu Kai was a proposed upgunned variant of the Type 3, fitted with an even more powerful 75mm gun to counter the latest Allied armour. Like the standard Chi-Nu, it was earmarked for home defence and represents the direction Japanese tank development was taking in the final year of the war as designers struggled to create vehicles capable of meeting American armour on equal terms. As a Kai (improved) variant it offers modellers a slightly different and rarer subject than the standard Chi-Nu, with the longer gun barrel giving it a more aggressive profile. A specialist subject for serious Japanese armour collectors who want the full range of late-war IJA tank development.
