The Type 94 TK was Japan's standard tankette during the early years of the Pacific War — a tiny, lightly armed vehicle designed for infantry support and reconnaissance in the vast terrain of China and South-East Asia. Small enough to be transported by rail across Japan's extensive network and light enough for the pontoon bridges of river crossings, the Type 94 was practical rather than powerful, and its service life extended far beyond its technical obsolescence simply because Japan had nothing to replace it with in sufficient numbers. The late production variant with its revised idler wheel arrangement represents the type as it fought in Malaya, Burma, and the Philippines. An unusual and compact subject that broadens any Japanese armour collection beyond the more commonly modelled medium tanks.
