The Universal Carrier — universally known as the Bren Gun Carrier — was one of the most produced armoured fighting vehicles in history, with over 113,000 built in Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand between 1934 and 1960. The Mk.I in its original configuration served from the very beginning of the war, fighting in France in 1940, the Western Desert, East Africa, Malaya, and every other theatre where British and Commonwealth forces operated. Open-topped, fast, and protected against small arms fire, the Carrier was the infantry's armoured companion — carrying the Bren gun team, the platoon commander, or the anti-tank rifle to wherever they were needed on the battlefield.
