The Panther Ausf. D was the initial production variant of Germany's most capable medium tank — introduced in enormous numbers at the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, where teething troubles with the new design were exposed in the most demanding operational conditions imaginable. The Ausf. D has specific features that distinguish it from the later and more refined Ausf. A and G variants, including the early cupola, the different hull machine gun arrangement, and other production details that dedicated Panther modellers will immediately recognise. Despite its early reliability problems, the Panther went on to become the most balanced and capable German tank of the war, and the Ausf. D represents its difficult but important beginning.
