The Junkers Ju 88A-8 Paravane was a specialist anti-balloon variant of the versatile Ju 88, fitted with cable-cutting equipment on the wings and nose to allow it to fly through barrage balloon cables without being brought down — a specific operational requirement for low-level attack missions against targets defended by balloon barrages. The Paravane equipment gives the A-8 a distinctive and unusual appearance that immediately sets it apart from other Ju 88 variants, and it represents the kind of specialist modification that the Ju 88 airframe was adapted to accommodate throughout the war.
