The Sd.Kfz. 223 was the radio-equipped armoured car of the Sd.Kfz. 221/222/223 light armoured car family, fitted with a large frame aerial over the hull and equipped with long-range radio for communications duties rather than direct combat. These radio armoured cars formed the communications backbone of German armoured and reconnaissance units in the early war period, maintaining contact between dispersed formations during the rapid Blitzkrieg advances of 1939–1941 when radio communication was the critical enabler of tempo and co-ordination. A technically important and visually distinctive variant of the light armoured car family, with the characteristic frame aerial that immediately identifies it.
