The Hawker Hurricane Mk.IIc was the most heavily armed variant of Britain's first monoplane fighter — fitted with four 20mm Hispano cannons in place of the earlier marks' machine guns, giving it devastating firepower for both air combat and ground attack. By 1942 the Hurricane had largely ceded the air superiority role to the Spitfire and was increasingly deployed as a fighter-bomber and tank-buster, serving in North Africa, the Western Desert, Malta, and the Far East where its rugged construction and ability to absorb punishment made it invaluable in the ground attack role.
