The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 “Fresco-A” was the Soviet Union’s standard swept-wing day fighter of the early-to-mid 1950s, entering service in 1952 as a refined development of the MiG-15 with a longer fuselage, thinner wing section, and three wing fences that significantly improved handling at high speed. Soviet Air Force markings cover the full range of operational schemes worn by Fresco-A aircraft through the 1950s and into the 1960s, when the type was progressively replaced by the MiG-19 and MiG-21 in first-line units. The MiG-17 remained in widespread second-line and export service long after, seeing combat in Vietnam and the Middle East.
