The Hawker Tempest Mk.V was the RAF’s fastest low-altitude fighter of 1944–45, capable of catching V-1 flying bombs and outrunning the Fw 190 at treetop height. 486 Squadron RNZAF flew Tempests from mid-1944, becoming one of the top V-1 hunting units during the Doodlebug campaign before transitioning to offensive sweeps over occupied Europe. New Zealand aircrew brought the same aggressive spirit to Tempest operations that had made 486 Squadron notable on Hurricanes and Typhoons, and their aircraft wore a mix of standard camouflage and the distinctive personal markings that characterised RNZAF units.
