The Spitfire Mk.IIA was the first Merlin XII-powered production variant, entering service with Fighter Command in late 1940 just as the Battle of Britain drew to a close. The “Aces” release focuses on aircraft flown by high-scoring pilots, giving the modeller the opportunity to build a named aircraft with a tangible piece of RAF fighter history attached to it. Individual aces’ Spitfires often carried personal markings and kill tallies that make them more visually interesting subjects than standard squadron aircraft, and the Mk.IIA’s clean lines reward careful finishing.
