The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa entered RAF service in September 1940, powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin XII and armed with eight .303 Browning machine guns. It served through the final phase of the Battle of Britain and the subsequent offensive sweeps over occupied France in 1941 — the “leaning forward into France” operations that saw Fighter Command go on the attack for the first time. Standard RAF markings on the Mk.IIa cover the full range of squadron schemes from the period, from the natural metal spinner aircraft of late 1940 through to the yellow-tipped props of the 1941 sweeps.
