The Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero Mk.52 was the most produced variant of the Zero and the type that bore the brunt of the mid-to-late war Pacific fighting. Introduced in 1943, the Mk.52 addressed some of the Zero’s structural speed limitations with a shorter non-folding wing and thicker skinning, allowing higher dive speeds. Despite these improvements, by the time the Mk.52 reached units in numbers it faced increasingly capable Allied fighters — P-38s, F6Fs, and Corsairs — that negated its manoeuvrability advantage with superior speed and firepower. The Zero’s era of dominance was over, but it remained the backbone of Japanese naval aviation until the end.
