The siege of Mariupol from late February to mid-May 2022 was one of the most sustained urban battles of the Russian-Ukrainian War. The Azov Regiment, alongside regular Ukrainian marines and National Guard units, held the city — and ultimately the Azovstal steelworks — against overwhelming Russian force for nearly three months before being ordered to surrender to preserve the lives of the remaining defenders.
