Scharnhorst was one of Germany's most active capital ships of the Second World War — a fast battleship that raided Allied convoys, participated in the Channel Dash, and was finally sunk by the Royal Navy at the Battle of the North Cape in December 1943 in one of the last classic naval gun actions of the war.
