The Mil Mi-24 Hind is one of the most formidable and recognisable attack helicopters ever built — a uniquely Soviet concept that combined the firepower of a dedicated gunship with the troop-carrying capacity of a transport helicopter. The Mi-24D variant, which entered service with Soviet forces in the mid-1970s, introduced the distinctive tandem cockpit arrangement with separate crew stations for gunner and pilot, along with upgraded weapons systems including the Raduga-Sh gun pod and Falanga anti-tank missiles. The Hind-D saw extensive combat in Afghanistan from 1979, where its combination of firepower, armour protection, and troop lift made it the centrepiece of Soviet air assault tactics.
