The Mi-24P Hind-F is the cannon-armed variant of the Soviet Union's legendary attack helicopter, replacing the flexible chin-mounted gun of earlier marks with a fixed 30mm GSh-30-2 twin-barrel autocannon on the starboard side of the nose. Introduced in the early 1980s as a response to the growing effectiveness of Afghan mujahideen ground fire, the Mi-24P offered significantly increased hitting power against hardened targets and infantry in the open. The Hind-F served extensively in Afghanistan and later conflicts, remaining in service with numerous air forces into the 21st century as one of the most combat-proven rotary-wing platforms of the Cold War era.
