U-176 was a Type IXC U-boat that conducted three patrols in the Atlantic and Caribbean before being sunk in May 1943 — a period that marked the decisive turning point of the Battle of the Atlantic, when improved Allied anti-submarine measures including improved radar, the closing of the Mid-Atlantic Air Gap, and the deployment of escort carriers and hunter-killer groups began to exact a catastrophic toll on U-boat operations. The Type IXC was Germany's standard long-range ocean-going submarine, with the range to reach distant theatres and a substantial torpedo load for sustained operations. The Turm II conning tower configuration shown in this kit reflects the progressive modifications applied to U-boat conning towers as crews gained operational experience and anti-aircraft armament requirements evolved through the war. Mirage Hobby's 1/350 kit captures the type in fine detail.
Long-range, far-reaching, and ultimately caught — the Type IXC in the decisive year of the Atlantic battle.
