The M3 Stuart light tank was the primary American armoured vehicle in the Philippines when Japan launched its attack in December 1941, and the subsequent campaign on Luzon in early 1942 saw some of the most desperate tank actions of the Pacific War. The 192nd and 194th Tank Battalions fought a fighting withdrawal down the Luzon peninsula, conducting rear-guard actions that helped preserve the retreating Filipino-American forces long enough to establish the Bataan perimeter. Outgunned by Japanese anti-tank guns and increasingly short of fuel and spare parts, the Stuart crews fought their vehicles until they literally ran out of the means to continue.
