The McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger II was the US Navy's most ambitious stealth aircraft programme of the Cold War era — and one of the most spectacular cancellations in American defence procurement history. Conceived as a carrier-based stealth strike aircraft to replace the A-6 Intruder, the A-12's distinctive flying-wing delta shape was designed to minimise radar cross-section while delivering heavy ordnance deep into heavily defended Soviet airspace. The programme was cancelled in January 1991 amid severe cost overruns and structural failures before a single prototype flew, leaving the Avenger II as one of aviation's great "what ifs" — a revolutionary design that never reached the sky.
The stealth strike aircraft that never flew — and never stopped fascinating.
