The Gloster Meteor was Britain’s first operational jet fighter and the only Allied jet aircraft to see combat in the Second World War — entering service in July 1944 and initially used to intercept V-1 flying bombs over southern England. The F.8 was the definitive post-war variant, introducing a longer fuselage, revised tail unit, and uprated Derwent 8 engines, and it served as the RAF’s primary frontline fighter from 1950 until superseded by the Hawker Hunter. Meteor F.8s flew combat operations in Korea with the Royal Australian Air Force, where they encountered the MiG-15 and found themselves outclassed — the encounter that demonstrated conclusively that swept-wing jets had made straight-wing designs obsolete.
