The Memphis Belle is the most famous B-17 of them all. In May 1943, she and her crew became the first Eighth Air Force heavy bomber team to complete a full tour of 25 combat missions over occupied Europe — a feat that at the time seemed almost impossible given the savage attrition being inflicted on Allied bomber crews by the Luftwaffe. The aircraft's subsequent war bond tour of the United States turned the Memphis Belle and her ten-man crew into national heroes, and the name has been synonymous with the bomber offensive ever since.
The B-17F was the variant in which the Belle flew her legendary missions — distinguished from the later G-model by the absence of the chin turret, with a more streamlined glazed nose that gives the F a slightly more elegant profile. Revell's 1/72 kit presents the aircraft in her famous olive drab over neutral grey finish, complete with the iconic nose art that made her instantly recognisable over the skies of Germany and France.
