RS Models’ 1/72 scale Bell XFL-1 Airabonita model kit recreates an unusual experimental fighter developed for the U.S. Navy. Kit 92232 offers a distinctive companion to the better-known P-39 Airacobra, exploring Bell’s attempt to adapt its unconventional fighter layout for carrier operations.
First flown on 13 May 1940, the Airabonita retained an Allison engine mounted behind the pilot, driving the nose-mounted propeller through an extension shaft. Unlike the P-39, it featured a conventional tailwheel undercarriage, underwing radiators and an arrestor hook for carrier use. Only one prototype was built, making it an interesting subject for collections of experimental aircraft and early American naval fighters.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Unless otherwise stated these models will need some construction and painting. Glues and paints are not included.
