RS Models’ 1/72 scale Northrop XP-79B Flying Ram model kit recreates one of America’s most unconventional experimental jet fighters. Kit 92257 offers a distinctive flying-wing subject for a collection of prototype aircraft and early jets, far removed from the conventional fighters of its era.
Developed during the 1940s, the XP-79B combined jet propulsion with a prone pilot position and an airframe constructed from welded magnesium alloy. The prototype made its first and only flight on 12 September 1945, before a fatal crash brought the programme to an end. Its unusual design makes it an interesting modelling subject for anyone exploring Northrop’s flying-wing development and the experimental beginnings of jet aviation.
